Club Report Summer 2004

C
ongratulations to Barb and John Carvalho on the birth of their beautiful daughter Caprice. Not a minute too soon for Barb, eh John?

We would like to welcome several new members and their German shepherd dogs/ puppies to the club. They include Cathie Winko and “Christy”, Phil Horseman and “Kaiser”, Sherrel Legacy and “Gamma”, and Pino Pucci and “Zeus”. We’ve never had so many vehicles in the parking lot. It looks very impressive!

Lol Carvalho is back in action with her new dog “Dakota” (aka Deek the Squeak) and we couldn’t be happier. After she retired her last dog “Gorby” due to allergies, she continued to come out every training session for a whole year to give us her much valued support, advice, and ideas, and to take us down a peg or two when we needed it. Nothing is more difficult than to come out to the club without a dog to work, and my hat goes off to her for hanging in there until she found another dog.

Claire and Marly put their dogs in a CKC trial in March with Marly and “Tucson” getting the last 2 legs of their CD. “Cabre” awed the crowd with power and focus coming away with his CD. Trish had entered “Cassie” in the same trial but the bitch came into season 4 days before, and had to be pulled. Now Trish has to spend a thousand bucks to travel to Sault Ste. Marie to get their CDX. There is something to be said for owning a male! Good luck Trish.

Over the winter as training and ideas became as stale as the air in our indoor facility, we looked for something fresh and new and we found that in Dorwin Anderson. We asked him to come to Thunder Bay to liven up our training and that he did. Dorwin (The Dog Whisperer) also brought calmness to the dogs so they could settle in and think about the work. He gave us tons of ideas in all phases and got us to think outside the box we had gotten so comfortable in. We went from boring to actually having fun with our dogs again.

Thanks again Dorwin for a great weekend and thanks also to William Fan for coming to Thunder Bay to support our club. The generosity you both showed us was much appreciated.

It wasn’t all fun and games though. Both Dorwin and “Cabre” (who had worn the skin off his pads) had a major problem with their socks twisting and the bottoms ending up on the top! This seemed to bother Dorwin far more than it did “Cabre” and became the main topic of discussion over drinks later in the clubhouse. Those cheep tube socks of Dorwin’s were the worst though. Maybe Velcro embedded in the skin would be the answer. See, we share advice and ideas too!

Claire and I will be traveling to Toronto to compete at the Ontario Regionals in June and preparations are in the works for a trip to the Nationals.
See you on the field and happy training.
